What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis refers to a combination of practices including suggestion, rhetoric, biofeedback and relaxation.  They are used as an approach to improving health.  It forms an important contribution to complimentary approaches to health and sports psychology.  However, in its current form its not achieving its full potential as its limited by a materialistic approach to science.

Sammohan: Sammohan has a specific purpose directly influencing or controlling a person (akarshan) or persons (sarvajan) at a distance or face to face.  It is rooted in a different set of practices that include, mantra, directed awareness evocation of innate-divine qualities and active use of an eroticised imagination. Sammohan has a specific purpose of directly influencing or controlling a or persons at a distance or face to face

What can Hypnosis gain from Sammohan?

How Sammohan can aid hypnosis in the following ways.

•    Building Faith and lack of self doubt
•    Developing single pointed attention

Faith and Removal of Self Doubt -

Sammohan requires a total faith and confidence in the ability of divine agents to work along with the practitioner to bring a person or group of people under control - subjugation.  In the case of Hinduism the deity that is worked with is Kamadeva.   In the Mahayana Buddhist tradition subjugation is under the control of Red Tara or Karakulle.  Practitioners have to develop absolute certainty without entertaining any doubt that the deity behind Sammohan is active and working with them. 

This principle can also be applied to hypnosis. The hypnotist must have absolute certainty that his interventions will have an effect on the suggestibility of the hypnotised subject. The more certain the hypnotist is of his ability to hypnotise his or her subject the easier it is for the subject to accept the suggestions of the hypnotist.  It is also easier for the subject to surrender personal autonomy to the hypnotherapist if they are using an authoritarian approach to hypnosis.

Developing Single Pointed Awareness -

Single pointed awareness is at the core of Hindu and Buddhist approaches to Sammohan.  The mind is focused without distraction on a single core point.  It could be the mantra for evoking the qualities of the deity behind Sammohan ( Kamadeva or Karukulle).  The mind enters a still or quiet point and the difference between self and other blend allowing the deity to directly influence the mind of another person or group of people.

Single pointed awareness can also be applied to hypnosis.  Developing the fixated stare by staring at a flame or a single point and stilling the mind makes the mind more sensitive to subtle clues from the hypnotised subject.  These cues can help the hypnosis to skilfully tailor his suggestions to the hypnotised subject.  They also develop the assumption of command and commanding gaze which is equally useful in an authoritarian hypnotic induction.
